Together we celebrated Pink Picnic 2019

Together we celebrated Pink Picnic 2019

Tenants and Pendleton Together celebrated the LGBT+ community with the Pink Picnic in Peel Park as part of Pride Month.

The Pink Picnic first started in 2011 and was started by an LGBT+ customer focus group based in Salford who wanted a way to celebrate the LGBT+ community. They initially expected no one to show, but after a large turnout it became an annual event. Pendleton Together are proud to be one of the main sponsors of the event and since 2011 it has grown and now gets thousands of people attending.

The whole event was buzzing with over 5000 people with their picnics and smiles to watch the outdoors entertainment. A new addition this year was a youth zone where LGBT young people and their friends could enjoy the day in a safe environment.

On our stall we invited staff and customers to tell us what they thought was ‘Top’ about living in Salford and what is ‘Pants’. There were some brilliant responses to the questions which proved how people in Salford are proud of their history, culture and community.

This year we asked for the help of tenants in the creation of our garden themed stall. One of our local residents, Kevin, helped with the design to successfully complete our proposed theme. He worked hard to help us be creative with it by including washing line windmills and bees. He has also enjoyed volunteering to help us with other events such as our International Day of Awareness of Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia.

Lynne Pendleton Together’s Community Initiatives Officer had this to say:

“We had a brilliant afternoon in the park meeting people from all over Salford and beyond, talking about what we all love about this great city. I want to say a big thank you to tenants who volunteered and helped put this together – we couldn’t have done this without you! We are all looking forward to doing it all again next year.”
